Hi, I am Stefanie (the f is the French Spelling, the Germans use the ph). To say I am new to chickens is an understatement. I know they have feathers and lay eggs, but beyond that, I am lost. I have 6 chicks and a number of questions. #1 How high should the fence around the run be? I lived in FL for years and once saw a video of an alligator climbing a backyard chain link fence. When the homeowners got home the gator was swimming in their pool. I am now in TN and gators are not a big problem, what other critters do I need to keep out? How much space do 6 chickens need for a run? I believe they are Black-Laced Gold Wyandotte, a meat bird, but I won’t bet my pants on it.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Welcome to BYC! Thanks for joining us.

The minimum amount of run space is 10sq ft per bird, but bigger is always better. As for how tall it needs to be, I'd do a covered run about 6ft-8ft tall so you can comfortably stand and walk around in it.

You'll need to keep out a variety of predators; raccoons, opossums, birds of prey, weasels, snakes, foxes, coyotes, skunks, bobcats, stray dogs and cats, bears, and possibly mountain lions. If you read through the forums you will find my threads and articles on deterring and predator proofing the coop and run.
