(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We inherited ~6 laying hens when we bought our house mid-2021. They've all since died and been replaced. I'm looking to begin with meat birds next year, and my wife has done most of the chicken business, so I'm pretty new to all of this.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

We have 5. One died about a week ago.

(3) What breeds do you have?

Excellent question! I have not the slightest idea. More learning is in store.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

Frankly, having a culinary background, I enjoy the abundance of eggs in season more than anything. It's quaint to have a New England homestead-ey vibe going, and I want to expand on that for a greater sense of self-sufficiency and enhanced culinary applications. Further, I like that my children get to grow up around animals. We have two Nigerian goats as well as a cat and a dog.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I mentioned cooking. That and things food-related are high on the list. I'm taking up vegetable gardening a bit more this/next year as well for similar reasons. Beyond that, I have three young children and one teenager, so time isn't something we have an abundance of.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I'm a real estate broker in southwestern New Hampshire. My wife and I are in our early-to-mid thirties, and we're raising our young family here and love it.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I discovered this community through Google today, and am excited to have found such a rich resource of niche information. Thanks to all who make it possible through organization, management, and participation.

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Sorry about the chick you lost! That's always a sad thing.

If you want to find out what breeds your chickens are, you can post pictures of them in our What Breed or Gender forum and folks will let you know.

You might like one of our other forums, DIY/Self-Sufficiency.

We're glad you're here!
