Hi there! We have 6 kids and we have been wanting to get chicks for 2 years now! Each kiddo picked out a chick of their "own" on Monday this week. It is super exciting! Lola picked out this Barred Rock at the co-op. I think it is a pullet from some (pre-membership) reading on BYC...

But...this little one has started pecking all the other chicks' eyes. We moved it to it's own space...but it doesn't like being alone. At 3:30 am I was cuddling it to calm it down. It got VERY verbal. I wrapped it in a kitchen towel and put it back to "bed" which kept it calm for a while.....
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Carrie and Co.

what color light do you have in their brooder? I believe if you use a red light there will be less picking, also is the brooder too crowded? The chick will not like being by itself, they need friends with them.

Hey there! Do you have them under a red light. That seems to help with mine. Not sure why exactly. Good Luck!

! Pleased you joined our community! I typed in 'eye pecking' into the BYC search bar and a couple threads came up. You might try it and read through them and see if someone has a solution to you!

Chicks(and grown chickens) are attracted to shiny things - like eyes - it's best not to have them close to your face unless you wear glasses.
