Hi All!
New to the forum and new to keeping chickens! I'm so happy to have access to a community of knowledge like this, places like this a shinning gem of the internet. I'm new to my region also, Sacramento, by Los Angeles--although not that much different, it's a bit hotter and colder than LA.
Last month I adopted my friend's flock of 8 hens, we're currently getting about 6 eggs a days (we have a few older gals). I built a coop and enclosed run for them, and they free range in the evenings (supervised until I can protect my veggie garden). I'm looking forward to posting about the coop and run I built, tap the well of knowledge, and engage with the community.

My answers to the new member questions sticky:
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes, new to chickens. I adopted this flock last month
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
8
(3) What breeds do you have?
2x Marans, 2 x Wyandottes, 1 x Cochin, 1 x Buff Orpington, 2 x Starlight Olive Eggers
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
My goal is some food self-sufficiency, so having eggs that I can eat or trade with are a favorite. I have a toddler and I'm incorporating him into the caretaking and building responsibility into the budding child.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening, hunting, spearfishing, photography, camping/backpacking/canoeing
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We're a family of three humans (two adults and a toddler), a cat, and now 8 chickens. I work at UC Davis running human genetics field research projects in South Africa.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I've known about this forum for about 3-4 months, and learned a lot from it while I was talking with my friend about adopting his chickens. I found it by googling specific questions, chicken topics and this forum popped up often. I love forums like this, that use the community to solve knowledge problems, I rely on forums like this in other aspects of my life (e.g., car/motorcycle repair). So it was a no-brainer to join once I got chickens.
