Hello everybody, my name is Sandra! I have acquired a goose that flew (I'm assuming) into my yard three months ago and never left. I believe it is a brown Chinese Goose and I don't know if it is a male or female. I live about a mile from a city park that has a pond, so I'm sure it's from there. I've called the city and they said it would fly off on its own, then I called a wildlife rescue but they were short-handed on volunteers to pick up any wildlife, so no-one could come for it. I don't mind the goose though, in fact, I have become very fond of it! I was just trying to do right by the goose, assuming that was wild and thought it would be happier in its natural habitat with other geese keeping it company. Anyone else ever come across a goose in this way? Did they ever leave? It seems really happy and has become really attached to myself and my children, it follows us everywhere and will even carry on a conversation with us. I want to do right by it until it decides to leave, IF it ever does. I've been feeding it lettuce, frozen corn kernels, and as a snack, I offer it watermelon. Are there any other foods that I should be providing? I am also unsure how much or how often to feed them. It also grazes on grass. I have also provided a little pool that it gets into often to clean itself and cool off. ANY advice is welcome as I am completely new to this.

Doesn't seem to be terribly feral which is good news for you...all the truly wild geese I've ever seen have kept a very wide berth from humans. Glad you're able to be near it without being bullied out of your yard...leads me to believe it's possibly female.

If you want it to stick around just continue what you're doing...let it graze on your grass, maybe some special treats here and there. Some sort of water source at all times is a must...doesn't necessarily have to be the pool, a bucket of water will work if you're short on time.

Congratulations!! And welcome! Happy to have you in the club...all our hearts have also been stolen by birds of one sort or the other!!

Feed appropriate for water fowl and or an all flock that is appropriate for all poultry. TSC is a good place to shop. That and grazing and some healthy treats like whole corn and water melon. Sounds like it was probably a dumped goose since it isn't wild and was looking for a home and found you and your children. So sweet you all have fallen in love. Enjoy the relationship its very special.
