New to the forum

Hello!! I live in Queen Creek, AZ. I have had chickens since December 2023. I currently have 7 hens (3 Easter Eggers, 1 Olive egger, two leghorns, a black Australorp, a speckled Sussex and four 2-week-old silkie chicks. I am always looking for information on my feathered friends so finally decided to join the forum.

Does anyone know that we have hit triple digits is it safe to take chicks outside instead of inside under heat source or should I keep them inside till fully feathered?

Hello and welcome to BYC! Glad you joined.
You can put them out but they should have dense shade, huge amounts of ventilation and lots of fresh clean water.

Thank you - I was thinking about putting them in the coop with the other hens but separated from them. But wasn't sure - appreciate your response.

Hiya, and welcome to BYC!

We're in Wisconsin, and raise silkies. I recently put my three-week-old ones out in my paint silkie breeding pen when it hit the 70s, lows 50s. They were far from feathered out. One paint hen went broody so I gave her five eggs and let her sit on them. She's a heat source in the hutch. I watched this set up closely the first couple of days as this is outside of my norm to do something like this.

They would frolic around having fun, then run into the hutch for 30 seconds and back out again. The rooster left them alone, and they have to dodge another hen, but otherwise, they're having a blast. It's been a week, and they're fine. They have a rooster and two hens in the 3x3 square hutch at night.

Yeah so they can’t really regulate their body temperature when they’re that little I would be wary I once took ducklings outside when it was too hot to soon and they started to look weak so I rushed them back in
