I have 4 grown chickens 2 hens and 2 roos, got them older. Now I have 15 chicks growing that I started since the begging and learning sooo much more. I also have 3 children. Thank you for having so much information available.. I just need to learn how to use the site.[IMG]. Right now im looking for ideas of building a chicken/duck/turkey/geese coop with shipping crates and or pallets.I will like to repurpose before buying new.

Welcome Alex it's nice to meet you. Some good places to find re useable materials are furniture/ big appliance stores, that periodically throw out the shipping crates. You could ask if they have any you can have. If you have any rehab stores they often have windows, doors, etc. that can be worked into your coop ideas. Craig's list is often a great place to find coops and sometimes ones with flock included and even the chicken feed. People get chickens and decide it's not for them and just want to dump everything. Also chain link dog runs are commonly offered, lengths or rolls of other type wire fencing, etc. A large dog house could be a shelter for ducks, etc.

I'm sure others replying will have more to offer.

I kept my chicks inside for a few months under a heat lamp because I was told they needed to be really warm for awhile. What's the weather like where u live?

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also pop in and say hello on your local thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you ‘Find your State’s thread.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out [IMG]
