New to the group! Utah Urban Chicken Farmers! ;)

Hi! We are new to being chicken farmers...sort of LOL. We had a pretty large flock when we lived in Idaho, but it's a little different for us here in the city!
We have the max flock our city will allow (5), and my kids absolutely love them! We have 2 Aurstralorps, 1 Americana, 1 Buff Orpington, and 1 Black Silkie....who actually turned out to be a rooster, so today we are rehoming our beloved little silkie. :(

My daughter really wants a Serama, but I don't know a lot about that breed, and am unsure how to introduce a new hen into the house, so any help with that would be greatly appreciated!!

Looking forward to learning from this site!

Glad you could join the flock! That's such a shame your silkie has turned out to be a roo. Great to hear though you have managed to rehome him. I have not kept seramas myself but they sure are beutiful birds. If you type in seramas to the search box above there are many ongoing thread about them. I'm sure lots of members will be able to help you.

Thanks! What do you do with the new chicken in the hen house? Do you fence off a portion for her as well? I can defiantly do it in the yard, but not sure what to do with her at night...
 


Not sure if you are still in Idaho? I'm in Utah. I tried Seramas before, out winter is hard on them! I decided not to go with those any more with our cold weather being so hard on them.

Go to this thread, you can learn more, ask questions, and maybe they can have great ideas for keeping them in the winter.

We moved to Utah about 5 years ago and purchased a home here last summer. :) Good to know....I think we will go with a hardier breed...or maybe just not replace him at all lol. I am not ready pecking order to be disturbed LOL!

Sounds like you have a lovely flock! I have buff orpingtons too. I've always wanted ameraucanas, silkies and black australorps. Sorry your one rooster turned out to be a rooster. That's always disappointing when you can't keep them. We can't have roosters here either.

Seramas a good chickens however if you are wanting a calm, docile pet, I wouldn't recommend them unless you and your daughter are willing to spend lots of time taming them. They are a very small bantam which means it's bound to be more flighty and antsy. Here's a link on them. https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/serama
