Hello everyone! I'm new to BYC. I'm from Perrysville, Oh. This seems like an awesome group! I just purchased 12 Golden Comet pullets for my coop..but they r in my house right now. I haven't had chickens in almost 2 years. I live in a forest and the raccoons killed my last flock before I got them cooped up for the night. It was upsetting and this time around I'm going to try to build a safer fencing structure. I was thinking about using a large outdoor dog kennel to attach to the coop for starters. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

The Learning Center is the best place to start, then the coop & predator sections. I believe electric fencing is best at repelling raccoons - they are the craftiest of the predators and just don't give up.

Sorry about your flock. But yes, the birds need to have a secure area to sleep at night and play during the day. Yes, the learning center is a great place to start with lots of good reads on all aspects of poultry keeping....

Also, you might want to check out our coop section to see what others are doing with their coops and runs...

You can ask some questions in our coop building forums....

And lastly, you can check out our predators and pests forums for ideas on how to keep your birds safe from specific critters...

Good luck with your up coming flock and enjoy BYC!

Welcome to BYC. Use hardware cloth around the mesh of the dog kennel. Raccoons will reach through large mesh and tear chickens apart - piece by piece.
