New to the Hen House...from NY

Ventucky Chick,

I am curious how you get the broody hen chicks...do you introduce already fertile eggs to her to hatch or just introduce chicks? You got me wondering, LOL!

Welcome from New York State! I also started out with buying several pullets to save on time and I didn't have the necessary things to hatch or brood. I still have 5 of the original 11. Everything went smoothly for me. Now, years later, I'm getting ready to incubate again. It's very addictive! Glad you joined us, there's tons of info on here! Sue

Sally8 (Sue) - we must be veritable "neighbors". I am near Otisco Lake (alas, not one of the true Finger Lakes, but the 1st puddle east). What kind of chickens do you raise? And may I ask where you obtained your pullets on your 1st chicken-go-round? Thanks!

Hi, sorry, my Mom has been ill. I'll go look up where that lake is! I live outside of Corning, just a short distance from Seneca and Keuka. My first pullets came from an ad on Craigslist and he posted that he lived in the same little town as I do. There were 5. I lost one right off, I'm sure to the heat, one prolapsed/peritinits and one we found dead. The other 6 also came from Craigslist from another little town nearby. So far, I've always had good luck getting healthy birds this way. I really like Delaware's. So, I have 2. I'm trying to breed for very dark eggs, I have 4 BCM hens and a roo, then I have 2 Silver Spangled Hamburgs, 1 Sizzle and a bunch of EE's. I've hatched out a doz or so BCM mixed with all of the above, 4 Poults from a Royal Palm hen and a Bronze/Royal Palm Tom. Just a mix and I love them all. Hopefully, I can sell most of the chicks, this year I'm working on the dark eggs. Glad you responded. How about you? Any breed in particular? sue
