New to the site. Hi everyone!!

G’Day from down under Shannon :frow Welcome!

Grab a coffee or your drink of preference cos do I have some reading material for you! ;)

First up, you might be interested in downloading this free e-book My First Year With Chickens

This article may help you decide on a breed: Pickin a Chicken

I see that Pork Pie mentioned the Topic of the Week articles which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group. I think this one might be of particular interest:
Topic of the Week - Getting Started, Keeping Chickens and there are others that are great for research or newbies.

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive , you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes and good luck!

Thank you we are actually waiting to hear from our allergist so we can go in and start her shots! They should be done making her shots anytime and then we will start them. I am glad to hear they worked for your daughter because they don't for everyone. Thank Goodness for modern medicine!! :bow

Hi Everyone! My name is Shannon i am a 45 year old happily married Mother of four children from ages 29 to 11, 3 girls and 1 boy. I have been a Daycare provider for many years and about a year ago i had to stop working because of Major back problems that i have had since i was 18 years old. We have four Sulcata tortoises and no other pets. My 11 year old Daughter is highly allergic to Dogs and cats. I am a Huge animal lover and did do Dog rescue for many years until she was born. Once our dog passed away at age 14 was when we realized her allergies. We took her to the allergist at age 3 and she was tested and now we know she is allergic to most everything. She is also a self induced Vegetarian and has not had meat in 5 years. So she is my high matinence one :)

I am very new to chickens! I have only had two in my life and it was a foster situation about 8 years ago We had two chickens for about a month when they were only a week old. We kept mostly inside and let them out supervised. They ended up at a local farm here and had a wonderful life! We are looking to get two chickens. I have not decided on a breed yet , i am doing as much research as i can before i take the next step. That is what led me to BackyardChickens. I want to know everything i can before designing their coop and getting the chickens. I appreciate this site and just know i am going to find lots of information here! Thank you all!!

Hey! I' new to this site too just signed up a few weeks ago :) Great site and happy that I found it. I have two silkie hens Margaret and Betty, they'e absolutely amazing!! These are my first chickens ever and now that I've them I will always have silkies. The hair is so dang cute! I never expected them to have such personalities like they do. Margaret my black acts very dog like If you have food she'll come sit by you and look at you until you give her something it' hilarious, she's very adventurous and so interested in what you'e doing. Betty our white one is more of stress ball She reminds me of the hen on the cartoon that always ran around yelling the sky is falling!! But at the same time she's a HUGE suck, she wull sit by you if you pet her belly and she purrs, she males the weirdest noises ever!! I suggest silkies hands down for indoor chickens. I forgot to mention mine are bantam silkies so they won' be more then maybe 2pounds. We have they'e coop right in our living room and when we're home they run around our kitchen and living room. Good luck with your search! Any questions let me know :)
