Hello from cold and snowy Iowa! At this time we do not have any chickens but are hoping to get some this spring. We live on a small acreage, slightly less then 3 acres. I am interested in raising some chickens that are friendly, weather tough, and good egg layers as well as pets. Okay, hubby would say good to eat but what does he know? I would love to hear what you all think is the "best" breed of chickens to raise.

from Indiana! Black Australorps, Rhode Island Reds, Orpingtons, Easter Eggers all pretty docile and cold tolerant. Have fun with your new addiction!

I have no clue what the "best" breed is. I have several kinds. You just need to figure out what you want them for. Eggs, meat or both. I plan to use mine for both.
