Hi, I love this site and I couldn't wait to sign up. We have 35 chickens. That's an estimate. We also have 5 rabbits. 3 are meat rabbits and the other 2 are pets. We just hit a big problem though. On November 27 I went into the chicken pen and I saw 1 of our Barred Rocks slouched on the ground. I checked her over for wounds and broken bones, nothing. She looked like she was in pain. She'd howl and flap her wings like crazy if she rolled onto her vent. She also won't eat or drink. So my husband and I brought her in the house to warm her up. We searched and searched the internet and read books, we're thinking she's egg bound. So we put olive oil in her mouth, we have used steam, I've also just washed her vent. Now I've seen her try and walk and she ate. And there are no large animal vets around where we live. Grrr. So I'm looking for anything. Can someone please shed light on this for me? Should i give her more olive oil in her mouth?

Hello and welcome to BYC

Sorry to hear about your hen. You should type "egg bound hen" or something along those lines into the Advanced search bar on top here. You'll find lots of threads on the topic. You can also post about your situation in the Emergencies section here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures for advice. Hope she gets better!

If anyone's wondering, we had to cull the chicken. I now know what is wrong and I'm trying to fix it before other chickens have to go.
