Welcome to BYC, Lucy. Glad you decided to join our flock. A lot of us were lurkers before joining. The first breed I ever had were Brahmas (about 50 years ago) and they were gentle giants. They were pretty good layers as well; three (occasionally four) eggs per hen per week, although their eggs (despite the large size of the birds) tended to run slightly smaller than some of my better laying breeds. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Thank you again everyone for the kind welcomes :)

I thought you might like to see the boys and the new girls.

Appy & Ash are now back at the farm and, being tame, I'm told are allowed to free range round the yard when not on "hen duty"! I would have loved to have kept my boys, but I am pleased that I went through the extra effort to find a decent breeder, at least I know they will be well cared for.

So, the new girls (fingers firmly crossed as they both look young, but I think I can be pretty confident)... Dottie the Araucana, who is taking everything in her stride and will be fine and Maggie the Brahma.

I see what people mean about them being gentle giants, she alternates between hiding in the coop and staying well out of the way. I have even seen her shaking; though I checked her over when they arrived and again yesterday, she looks well and certainly is strong when she wants to get down! It's a shame because the rest of the girls are very good with newbies,, you get the odd passing peck, but no bullying and mostly they all huddle at one end of the run telling me off endlessly whilst the newbies have free range of the rest of it! It also doesn't help that the girls all still roost overnight outside and Maggie is in the coop, I have put in some new lower branches for her, but she hasn't taken the bait. It's only been 48 hours but I do feel sorry for her, particularly given the stark contrast with Dottie's behaviour. Here I was worrying that a Brahma wasn't the chicken for me, being so different to what I would choose for myself, and now I am fussing over her like crazy!
