I posted this in another thread, but will re-post it here again as an introduction:

Hey all, we used to have chickens in northern California, but it was never a problem there.

Now that my son is four and has shown to be gentile and kind to animals I want to get some chickens again.

I'm planning on building the coop myself, factoring in how I will keep them cool/warm during the seasons, predators and the like... (Any good design plans?) They'll have access to a garden during the day. (Feast on the bugs!)

I never thought of "chicken laws" before... I mean, I thought it was everyone's right to have animals. If they aren't noisy and smelly, who cares? Dogs make way more noise and stink worse than chickens.

So my question(s):
My closest neighbor's yard is 30 feet away (fenced). Will they care? I can always offer them eggs...

Since I'll be home schooling my son, will I be able to say that it's a "school" and therefore exempt from the 50 foot rule?

And where can I get the best layers in San Diego?

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to BYC!

Don't know much about San Diego (we lived in the Bay area before moving to Reno). But I do know that every city in Califonia makes it's own rules. To find out what rules your city has, you can do a search on here. A little while ago BYC compiled a list of cities and chicken laws. Try searching under chicken laws or do a search off of BYC for Municipal codes for your area.
As for neighbors, that would depend on how your neighbors are. Mine are thrilled with my chickens (I do bribe them with fresh eggs). Some people can be real nasty about it though.
Good luck!

Thanks, Sunny!

I have read the rules on chickens for my area and they say 25 chickens are allowed only if not within 50 feet of another dwelling. My closest neighbor is at 30 feet...

However, there is a stipulation saying schools or places where children learn (field trips) are exempt from the 50 feet rule.

Since I am homeschooling my son... Maybe it counts? Haha, not sure.

I just don't want to build a coop, buy feed, buy chicks, get attached to them just to have a neighbor make an anonymous call and have them hauled off.

From Western Washington State. I would just talk to your neighbor and see what they have to say. Let them know that you aren't planning on having 25 chickens, and go from there. Also I would think that just the chickens have to be 50 feet or more not you, and or your house. What about the other side of your yard from that neighbor.

Yep, measured from where I'd keep my chickens to my neighbor's house. Darn these close city properties!

The neighbor in question is actually on the next street over, our backyards are separated by a chain-link fence (and some bushes). I've never met them, but I suppose now is good a time as any!
