New to this site and horrified by the killer comments!

Why are so many people here talking about killing predators and doves (who aren't predators, just eating feed) and culling chicks??????
One of my friends showed me a couple of threads he was interested in, and they looked good, so I signed up.

OMG!

I hope this isn't typical!!!!!!!

I have six hens, one rooster, and one cockerel, all Buff Laced Polish. I don't want any advice that tells me to kill chickens FOR NO GOOD REASON!!!!!
Every fall the extra animals that will not be wintered over are culled, in a very humane way. That is called farm life.
And predators that are killing live stock are also killed, also farm life. If this disturbs you then simply don't click that thread.

Anyone mentioning killing a bird would most likely be for a very good reason. Many people on here are selfish and keep a bird alive even though it’s clearly suffering. They only do this because they can’t seem to come to grips with life and death themselves or lack the ability to reason.

Yes often it is in the birds best interest to cull it.

New to the forum too but have to say, “horrified” might need to be replaced with “inexperienced”. These are animals. The circle of life continues. It would be inhumane and unethical to allow suffering because we are uncomfortable with the best option. My suggestion is, be respectful of others beliefs, retire the “!!!”’s and stop judging based on emotion. My guess is you joined to learn. Read up and form an informed opinion on if folks are saying to “kill” without reason. If they are, I’ll be the first one to have your back.

And I’ve learned that “cull” can have different meanings depending on the situation. Not saying that whatever thread you saw didn’t mean cull=kill— but oftentimes, cull is used in the sense of “remove from your flock”. That can mean remove via humane euthanasia... but it can also mean remove to another home away from your flock.

Some people, for example, re-home unwanted roosters... but others send them to freezer camp. As others have mentioned , having a plan to deal with animals that you cannot keep is part & parcel of responsible animal husbandry. So is being able to deal with pests and/or predators that pose a risk to your animals.
