I'm working on getting space ready for some ducks - will get ducks after the space is ready for them.

So...where should I look to purchase some ducks when our space is ready?

A lot of people will post on Craigslist. Always good to check locally there and you don’t have to worry about shipping. Usually local tractor supplies, runnings, aubuchon hardware will have ducklings. Obviously depending on where you are located I don’t know if you have these stores nearby. There is many hatcheries online that you can order from or maybe you have one close enough to pick up from which would be the best case but from personally experience there is a lot of places that are back ordered right now. I prefer to get them young and hand raise them so they are friendly. However depending on your flock mine for example I can not add another drakes so if I get ducklings I need them to be sexed and mostly stores are only straight run. So it really depends on what you’re looking for. If you want an all male flock, it is much easier getting a mature drakes opposed to a hen.

I know where Arab is, used to live in Huntsville. Do you want ducklings or adults? Is there a particular kind you prefer?
I was thinking ducklings, just because we can get them used to us from the very beginning, but I'm not opposed to adults.

I'm researching breeds now. I know I'm wanting some for egg production. Our neighbors have Indian Runners, which are cute, but they just drop an egg wherever they happen to be when they need to lay one. While it's great when they lay them in our yard (I've been told to keep them), I don't know that I necessarily want a duck of our own that's going to have me doing an Easter egg hunt every day :lau

I'm thinking 1 drake and 4-5 hens, so we can have some ducklings and some eggs.

Sometimes it just depends on the duck and not the particular breed where they will pay their eggs. My hen for example created her own nest in a hollowed tree and I made a nest box for her in our duck house. She does lay in the nest box now which is an awesome plus. Sometimes taking the eggs she lays whenever and putting them in one place will help or buying false eggs to leave in there

My muscovy have only ever laid in their nesting boxes in the coop, under the coop, and in 1 nest in a small area of bushes in my yard
