Hello! I'm new to the group, although I don't have a lot of knowledge in the chicken raising department, I'm certainly not new to them either. However after a long haul with over 30 hens and roosters that I had inherited, I've managed to dwindle the flock down to 6. Was supposed to be 5 but one rooster managed to avoid the departure. So he's learning still how to be nice because t well see.
But I REALLY NEED SOME HELP! Today the other rooster I have who is got to be the best rooster I've ever seen ever, he is not violent. He is a protector. He stands his ground. He's head of the roost. He makes the ladies feel comfortable. He's an awesome rooster. He's grandfathered into this property. And he's basically our pet. Unfortunately today he was attacked by a dog a pitbull. Now his just standing there. There's a little cut on his face. Quite a good cut. He's bleeding and he was standing there for a while in the shade and just standing and then he slowly. He's got his eyes closed. Now his head's hanging down. He eventually laid down. He's still breathing. This was about 4 hours ago. He's a friendly rooster but he still won't let me touch him. I don't have any idea. I think he's in a lot of pain. I don't have no idea what to do. Somebody can please give me some advice. I really would appreciate it. Thank you.

You need to try and isolate him in a darkened space, look him over real good, looking for open wounds. Clean what open wounds you can see and put some antibiotic cream dressing on the wounds.

Sorry about what happened to your rooster. You'll need to take a picture so we can see the cut and I'd post this in our Emergency Forum with the picture.

In the meantime, you'll have to catch him, at night maybe? Wrap him in a towel so you can address his wound. I'd rinse it with saline solution to clean it. You could put triple antibiotic ointment w/o painkiller on it. I'd keep him inside or at least somewhere warm and quiet as he's probably in shock. Electrolytes can help him with the shock.

Chances are he seems to not have been damaged so bad.
If you could put a towel or piece of fabric for over him.
Do you possibly have a place you can keep him quiet a night.?
Start there.

You may have to wait until dark to get your hands on him. Then get his wounds thoroughly cleaned and spray disinfectant spray on them then apply a good coating of antibiotic ointment on them.

As mentioned, he needs to rest in a warm, quiet room inside a crate with dry bedding. I'd use a large puppy pad so shavings don't get in his wounds. Offer him warm water with some sugar or raw honey dissolved in it along with some poultry electrolytes. Also offer him a second water source with just plain clean water.

He's in shock from the attack and you need to address that first by keeping him calm and hydrated.

Please report back on his progress and his luck with him.

What happened to the dog?
Is there any chance of it coming back?

No. The dog will not be back. It was a visitors dog.
