Chicki Tiki Tavi
In the Brooder
I've been visiting backyardchickens.com for advice since the day I brought my babies home 2 months ago. I teach preschool and we hatched eggs at the end of the year as a learning experiment. We got the eggs from the local feed store owner, who has a large flock of bantams and other mixed breeds. We put 24 eggs in our incubator and, because of 3 and 4 year old curiosity and table shaking, only 15 of them hatched. One of them, sadly, didn't make it past the first day and I was left with 14 chicks. Normally we would send the chicks home with students, but we didn't have enough to go around. So they went to "The Farm", i.e. my backyard.
We are unsure about which rooster fertilized these eggs, so it seems I have some mixed breeds on my hands.
I rummaged up an old dog house to use as a coop after they got too big (stinky) to stay in my spare bedroom any longer, and they've been thriving in there since.
This is my first experience as a chicken mommy and I want to do right by them. I feel as though I've read the entire internet on caring for them, but nothing beats the advice of a veteran chicken owner. They've got a warm and dry place to sleep at night, fresh food every morning, an awesome waterer with nipples on the bottom that I found at the fleet supply, and a mommy that loves them. Any advice you have to offer would be greatly appreciated.
