My wife and I had been discussing getting chickens and out of the blue, friends of ours called and asked if we wanted their chickens. Of Course we said yes. We now have 5, all different breeds.

I built a temporary shelter in our unheated garage for them until I buy or build a coop for outside. 4x8' should be fine for the next 2 weeks, maybe 3.

Seems we have
Lavender Orpington
Americana
Aerecana - white
D'uccle
Silkie - white

Other than my misspelling of all the above names, they are doing well.

Funny thing is we can't get a straight answer as to how old the actually are. None are presently laying, we are guessing 6-12 months.

Any idea how to determine their age?

Very nice looking birds! They look of laying age. They may have just gone thru a molt, which will clamp off the eggs, the low light of winter and the cold can also shut off egg production. Also, birds that get moved to a new home will stop laying for a spell until they get used to their new digs. Spring is coming and they should be laying soon.

Great to have you aboard and enjoy BYC!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! That is a cute little flock, the d'Uccles are great pets. Like TwoCrows said, they look old enough to be laying, but with the shorter days and moving etc it may take them until spring to start again. Have you had a chance to take a close look of their legs, it might just be the one picture, but the scales on the white one especially look kind of rough.

You are about right on you guess of the age of your flock but you need to get ready for them to start producing egg's as they look about ready except the baby of course
