Ok so I have managed to get two white turkeys. They are still young. Looks like they have all of their feathers but their heads are still yellow with baby fuzz (don't know what it is called)

I grew up with parents that have had chickens and for some reason I wanted to try my hand at turkeys. I really wanted a pair of a heritage breed but my mom bought me these two white turkeys. *sigh* I don't know what sex they are. Currently they are living in my garage in a cage with a light and their little chicken buddy that came with them for free. I plan to build a cage with a coop and let them free range during the day. They are currently eating layer crumbles. I have no idea how old they are.

They seem to be doing well, although one is petrified of me while the other is timid but once I get it and hold it close to my chest it relaxes and will just stay there. The chick does the same thing. So can someone give me a little info on when they can go outside? The chick isn't fully feathered yet, just has his wing feathers, so I imagine they won't be going out until he has feathers. What else can they eat? Or is sticking with the layer crumbles good enough for now? Is there anything special that I have to do with these guys or gals? Any other tips or info would be greatly appreciated.

Hubby just noticed them for the first time (I snuck them home) and he thought they were ducks.

Congrats on your turkeys! The layer feed is way way low on protien for growing turkeys. Layer is about 16%, we feed ours a 28% for the first 8 weeks and then feed start n grow (20 %).

You don't want to put turkeys outside to early, they can chill very easy. Depending on the outside temp we don't put ours outside until at least 3 months, if it's colder more like 4 months.
