New turkeys...keep them penned?

Hi all! We just got 3, 20 week old turkeys today. The guy we got them from said to keep them penned up for a few days.

We free range our ducks, chickens and guineas and put them in a coop most nights.

Is it necessary to keep the turkeys penned for a few days?

I ALWAYS keep new birds penned for at least 2 weeks. My reasons: First I want them quarantined to watch for signs of illness that could affect my flock. And second, they need to think of my place as home. If you just turn them out, they will very likely take off. I gave someone a pair of geese, they took off. The next day they saw the geese in the distance, and that was the last she ever saw of them.

Good luck with your turkeys, they can be really neat!

They need to learn where home is. Keep them penned up at least a few days.
