New (unusual) Button Quail Chick

The first 2 is this cute little black colored guy. he has lots of red feathers in the back... Is he male??

Pics 3 and 4 is my little white one. Btw What is that silver on its head??? I literally just noticed that today????? And no red feathers.

Also last thing... Does anyone know how to hold them the best way?? I need to learn a better technic. Thanks

:)

The black one is a blueface male. The white one is probably a silver tuxedo that just doesn't show very much silver, making it probably impossible to sex by appearance. If you house it with a certain male and keep the two alone, you will likely be able to tell by its behavior in a few weeks if it's male. And if you find an egg in the cage, you'll know it's female ^^

I just wanted to share my little Button chick that hatched out today. I've brought it and its family inside as the weather is going to pack up and I don't want this precious baby wandering off in the aviary and getting lost (that's happened before).

It's patterned like a wild type but instead of black stripes it has light grey/brown stripes. I had one hatch the same colour awhile ago but it died early on so I never got to see what colour it would turn out to be.

I do have Caramel in the genetics of my birds and I'm wondering if it acts like a diluting gene as I've had very diluted silvers coming through.

Here's the precious bubby with its wild sibling to show the difference:

Here's what my caramel and cinnamon chicks look like and it's not like either of them:

We only have five mutations here in New Zealand: Wild, Cinnamon, Caramel, Silver and Ivory, so I'm hoping this little one makes it and I can see what it turns out to be.
I have a chick very similar to that (Very similar to wild-type, just with silver stripes! He's a little over a week old and beggining to feather. I'll post some pics soon. He actually darkened up from when I got him. There was another chick that looked pretty much identical to your one, sadly he died on the first night. The mum was solid white I believe, and this is a pic of the dad (From the original post)

He looks like a diluted cinnamon male. I love him! I'm wondering if they are what that Australian breeder referred to as Bronze, but there were no photos so I can't know for sure.

Looking forward to photos of your little ones. :wee

I got in contact with this lady (who sounds lovely) and if she ever has any eggs abandoned she'll have a go at sending them to me because this does look like the colour my little ones will turn out to be. It would be a bit of a road trip to go up to her, and seeing as my dear husband is driving me to Tauranga to pick up a Bourkes parakeet, I can't quite ask to do a similar road trip in the opposite direction anytime soon!

I got curious and googled Bourkes parakeet. Holy moly that's one pretty parakeet. In the U.S. you normally only see blue, green, yellow, and sometimes white. Never seen a pink one.

They are very pretty, and very sweet birds. They are lovely to keep because they sing beautifully, are very tidy, and they don't chew.
