New Veterinarian specializing in poultry...

Hello to everyone!

With the advanced training am introduced to many poultry diseases, biosecurity, laboratory test for programs such as NPIP run by the USDA, flock health and evaluations, diagnostics and many other experiences. I am not sure where my training will take me but I am open to everything. I will be working with other veterinarians on special procedures such as surgery and emergencies but that will most likely be as a consultant.

I am open to question but as I said I am learning...so I am here to gain knowledge from all of you that have WAY more experience than I do!

I once considered going for the Poultry Science Degree and the curriculum at UGA is similar if not the same as your program - but my reasons were to try to better care for pet chickens. I also looked at the Avian Health and Medicine program which I think focuses more on practice - but I don't have a DVM and that's the admission requirement :( And being ..hmmmmm...beyond middle age

it would really make me the #1 Crazy Chicken Lady to go for a DVM and then an additional degree that likely won't cover the time, cost and effort.

Chicken owners are quite crazy ( and I'm proud of that :) and truly love their flocks just as much as folks love cats and dogs. The biggest challenge we face is a prejudice against the idea that chickens can be lovable, fun and enrich our lives....Not to mention laying those wonderful eggs.

I believe y'all will have opportunity in your courses to learn more than we can from textbooks and google searches. Feel free to ask questions, you'll find most folks here helpful and friendly.
But I am certain we all will love to hear your input as your studies progress.

Welcome to Backyard chickens JesHoc123 !! I hope you enjoy it and the camaraderie here and everybody that goes nuts over chickens (me being one of them....) Have fun! And ask questions! Wow, you sound like you will be a valuable resource! My local vet has been quite a wonderful one, he even went to the extent of stitching a 2 week old chick for me!
