I am debating if I should purchase the new plastic waterer with self contained heater or should I stick with the metal waterer and the metal heater.

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on it.

I have the waterer with the self contained heater. I love the heater part but hate the overall design. The bottom (or lid when you fill it) does not like to attach easily and then when you flip the container around to place in the hen house I usually end up dumping the water because the lid pops off. It is definately a love hate relationship with this waterer.

I also bought a self contained heated waterer and so far I like the unit. It's outside in the run on top of blocks ( 8 ") in a corner with a wind breaker on 3 sides. The water stays clean, doesn't freeze and provides plenty of drink for 3 hens while I'm away 7-10 days. The mfg.,Farm Innovators, makes many different quality outdoor products with heating elements, I'm confident this will prove to be a reliable source of water in freezing conditions.

I like mine so far. It is hard to place the bottom on. I will see when we get those -30 nights up here in MN.

Maryland temps are not nearly that severe! I 'll be interested in how the unit works in those conditions.I placed heater in the wind for test purposes..no problem with 10-15..
