Howdy! My name is Jenneca and I have heard many great things from this site and so very happy to have finally joined. I'm sorry to start off with an urgent matter but I'm in much need of help!
I have a new hen I brought home last night and as if tonight she finally was getting comfy with my girls. My gate didn't latch like it should have tonight and my new Aussie pup got out with us being unaware. She got my new hen! Her bum is bleeding as well as has sores all over her back. She's panting and distressed. I have removed her and confined her with badadine all over her body. What can else should I do!? She seems to be in a lot of pain with panting so much.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock, sorry it's not under better circumstances and that your hen has been injured :hugs You have done the right thing by separating her, try to keep her as quiet as you can as she is more than likely in shock from the attack. Keep her covered so it's a little darker for her as this can reduce stress. For now if you have cleared the wounds and stopped the bleeding I would give her chance to calm down and then re check her. The wounds will need to be kept as clean as you can to stop infection developing. Yo could also post in the emergency section for more help and other tips on helping her. Wishing you the very best of luck with her, I hope she is well soon :fl

the panting is probably from shock.. give her some heat in a cage by herself in a darkened room or with a towel. 85 degrees is a good temp. to shoot for. make sure she dont get over heated. you can give her some electrolytes as well. welcome to BYC

Sorry about your new hen, she probably is in shock, that's what happens when they think they are being eaten alive. If she comes out of that - she will probably heal fine. Just check for infection. Chickens seem to have amazing recuperative powers. Yours is not the first one to be mauled by the family dog. Thing is, now that your dog has had a taste of chicken - it will be looking for other chances to repeat. Do not let flies get into her would, even if it means keeping her inside.. The resulting maggots cause much more serious damage than the initial wounds.
