New world quails are not easy to raise

Do you keep them on wires or on the ground?

I have always kept my quail on the ground when possible. If I didn't have the room in an aviary, I kept them in rabbit hutches and used grass hay for bedding. Even on the aviary floor, I used some sort of litter.

Wire is hard on the pads of quail and over long term, wire will give them bumblefoot. Birds being raised for meat do ok on wire since their lives are so short. All this being said, I raise all babies on wire until 5 weeks of age which helps to prevent Coccidiosis while allowing for development of immunity, then at 5 or 6 weeks they go on floors with litter.

How difficult a species of quail may be will depend on whether you accommodate them with the living conditions they prefer living in. The new world quail, because they are wild, prefer lots of space and cover to hide in to make them comfortable. There are pros and cons with coturnix vs the new world quail and it all depends what you're looking for. If you want calm egg laying quail, coturnix is the way to go followed by the bobwhite variants (e.g. snowflakes). If you want to keep a quail for their beauty, the new world quail is the way to go. I started off with one of the hardest quail species to raise: the mountain quail. I gave them my backyard (with lots of cover) and they're not so tough to raise. After a little bit of outdoor conditioning, they are smart and fast. Sometimes, I feel bad for the hawks.
