New York BYC members thread

I also live in upstate New York in a small county called Otsego county on a small family owned and operated farm. We have Buffs and Rhode Island reds. There is probably about 30-45 chickens including a rooster here. I tend to the chickens every single day- water and feed if needed and as a great give them cracked corn. As soon as it gets light outside I let them out of their coop for the day than as soon as it begins to get dark they go inside to settle down for the night. I get between 15-20 eggs per day seeing how some of the buffs are still too young to start laying.

your about an hour from me. My husband and I run our family farm with help from our 5 kids. Currently we have 80 chickens 1 duck 7 cats and 2 dogs. We are coming to the close of year 3 as farmers. Starting in the spring we will be building cattle housing and put up fencing. Everyday is an adventure and yes monotonous at times, but 100% better than living in even a small town.

I'm so glad that I have people to talk too instead of just animals. What really irritates me is there is others who live on this same property as me but they don't do anything that resembles working including lifting a finger to help me out because I have mild medical issues going on that makes it difficult for me to carry buckets of water to fill the waterer for the chickens but there isn't a day that goes by that I don't fill the waterer or collect eggs or give the steers their daily treat. The steers that are here live mostly on grass and hay, yes they have free access to water but they only get a little grain in the morning.

My health isn't so great either and trust me, kids are not the best farm help. We do a ton of gardening from the last frost until the first one. We even grow a "chicken garden" all winter so they can have their fresh greens. My aunt lives on our property and helps as much as she can, but her age and health prevent her from doing much.

As long as you don't let the work stress you it's great therapy. I spend about 2 hours a day tending the chickens this time of year.

That's the thing! The others that here are not kids at all. They are 21 and 22 years old boyfriend and girlfriend but they have never been taught to put responsibilities first and to prioritize the important things. All they do is play on their game system until one of them has to go to work

] nothing for them, NOTHING, don't cook for them don't do squat. Once they have no clean undies they will wake up.

I don't anyway. I don't take their laundry out of washer and put in the dryer it never gets done and then I am not able to do mine. When they do their laundry I tell them washer is done and they say to me" I'll get it in a min" then they forget about it so in a way I do their laundry in the long run.
