New York state egg selling regulations

Hi Karu from St Johnsville (about 40 minutes west of you!)

I myself wonder about the legalities of selling eggs, the one thing I do know is that you may not use a marked carton to sell another's eggs ( for instance, you can't use a carton saying Stewart's to sell your eggs). I don't sell much, I have a small flock, I usually just give away to neighbors and co workers. But I'd like to add to my flock in spring and maybe make a few bucks, so let me know what you find out.

Hi neighbor,

so far I am under impression that everything must be properly graded, boxed, blah-blah-blah.
As far as boxes - last year, before the chickens, I'd bought eggs at 'Honest Weight' coop in Albany and they were packaged in recycled cartons, it had seller's stickers over original box though.

If I find out anything else I will post it.

I emailed the Dept of Ag. Just thought you might like to see what they said:

You do not need a license to sell eggs in NYS until you have 3000 or more birds; which it does not seem as if you have. The eggs do have to be graded with the use of a candling light. You can access the grades by going to the link below - attached you should have the 2 handouts describing the marking requirements. Selling eggs directly to consumers is exempt from grade and size labeling requirements, which is what itseems like you intend to do.

But, the other marking requirements are still required. If you cannot access the grades on our web site, open the attachments - or have any questions - feel free to contact me either by e-mail or phone - I can send you hard copies of them all - Bill

Do you have these files available to share? My husband wants me to sell eggs at the local farmer's market with the kids (not fr money, just for the experience), so knowing would be helpful. Thanks!!!
