All my birds were raised from eggs bought from private breeders. I favor barred rocks as they are good layers throughout the winter and seem to be very docile in comparison to other breeds. Have also raised RIRs and comets. They didn't produce nearly as well in the winter and the roos were just plain nasty.

I had a game bird breeders license for a while so I raised ring tail pheasants. Beautiful birds but they require lots of space and care.

My favorite birds are quail. There small and easy to care for as they don't need a big coop. Plus they mature & start laying in ~7-8 weeks. The down side is the short life span of ~1 yr and there inability to tolerate cold weather. I over winter a few breeding pairs in the basement. That keeps me in eggs plus gives me a head start on the next breeding season in the spring.

how about this: i'll go over my list of hatchings this weekend and get back to you with what I can share. I go to Binghamton once per week so we could meet and share.

I've been hearing the coydogs a lot lately too. If you have too many babies in your basement I'm sure I know someone who could take them (ME ME ME ME

Hello all. I live in Center Moriches. This is my first post. We have 7-4 week old hens. I am currently in full coop construction mode. I've spent quite a bit of time reading posts to learn the do's and don'ts. Tonight after watching the "thundering herd" take turns hopping onto the water bottle, I read here on BC that a roost is OK for our young girls. It only took 3 min. for them to start the king of the roost show. This is certainly a perfect site to to explore and get a good understanding of whats ahead. Thanks to all the BC community for their thoughts and great photos. JIM
