My name is Carol and I am a newby!
I quilt and knit as well. Raising chickens in retirement is a great hobby! The chickens are hardly any work and offer a respite from sedentary hobbies. I have 9 laying hens and 3 Guinea guys who eat up the profit in the winter but earn 3X their keep in the spring and summer eating the ticks and mosquitoes on my acreage. I keep Gold- laced Whyandottes and Rhode Island Reds.
I don't have a get rid of eggs problem as I take them to my church and sell at least 6 dozen a week or give them to the parishoners. It is a lovely way of meeting people as well. Restaurants, work or meetings are a good way to contract sales. It is great coffee money! Post your news! I love hearing what the rest of the world is doing! Happy Chicken Days!

That was a lovely introduction, Carol. Welcome to the group!

Poultry care in the winter is anything but a sedentary hobby, for sure. I check for eggs every hour or so to prevent freezing and run water out to the two coops that I can't put electric waterers in (they are so predator-proof that I can't wedge an electrical cord in anywhere).

I was planning to add guineas because of their incredible bug-eating ability, but fell in love with runner ducks first. Then geese. Then, I realized I had to draw the line somewhere. lol.

I am also retired, would like to quilt, and pretend to be a knitter (hey, I have needles, yarn and patterns. I'm almost a knitter!).

Happy Chicken Days right back at you!

Hi Carol, it sounds like you don't have a problem with egg production :) Make yourself at home here.

If you'd like to share your hobbies with us, there are 10 mini contests going on right now so you might like to join in on them. Use the link in my signature and you'll find the contests.

Hi! :frow Welcome to BYC! You get 6 dozen eggs from 9 chickens in a week? Wow. I agree chickens are a great retirement hobby. Most of the time I just love caring for them and watching them. But, I'm with @Callender Girl about them being a bit of a chore in the winter. I also have to haul water to them in the winter, sometimes several times a day. But, they are always happy to see me, so it is worth it.
