Hi, welcome to the forums.

Purchasing from a local farmer isn't always a good idea. If you read these forums you will see several posts over the years where people buy local to round off their flock, only to introduce a disease that quickly kills several previously healthy birds. From what I have seen, your best bet is to purchase hatch-lings from a reputable mail order company. Most companies go through great lengths to prevent communicable disease.

from California, try posting here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you to find someone in your area, also try Craigslist, you can ask around at the feed store, or also like rikithemonk suggested you can purchase goslings (baby geese) from hatcheries. My local feedstore right now has goslings for sale. Good luck!
