Thanks for letting me in byc! I'm very new to all of this! I was searching for ways to start raising my own chickens when I came across this site! It seems to be perfect for all my questions and needs! It took me awhile to convince my husband for chickens so we can have fresh eggs! Now I have him convinced I want to get it going before he changes his mind! Haha! I have several friends that have them and are being really helpful but I feel you can't have to much advise on something you have never done before!

I live in the country with farm fields all the way around me! I have no worries of making anyone mad with having chickens! I have read so much about different breeds etc. I live in central indiana and I guess my first question would be what would be my best choice? I would like to have eggs daily I know some do not lay everyday!

So far as breeds go, for egg numbers alone, commercial White Leghorns for white eggs and the Red Sex Links (Golden Comet, Red Stars, ISA Browns etc) for brown eggs are probably the most popular layer. If you want breeds that don't lay quite as well but will lay for a longer time, Australorps, Orpingtons (lots of people really like these, great pets), Plymouth Rocks, Sussex, Delaware and Wyandottes are some other popular breeds that are usually pretty easy to get along with, they all lay different shades of brown eggs. The Easter Egger, often sold as Ameraucana by hatcheries, are a fun breed because they usually lay green/blue eggs that kids like, and they tend to be very nice birds, and then there are the Welsummer and Marans for dark brown eggs.
