Thanks for letting me in byc! I'm very new to all of this! I was searching for ways to start raising my own chickens when I came across this site! It seems to be perfect for all my questions and needs! It took me awhile to convince my husband for chickens so we can have fresh eggs! Now I have him convinced I want to get it going before he changes his mind! Haha! I have several friends that have them and are being really helpful but I feel you can't have to much advise on something you have never done before!

I live in the country with farm fields all the way around me! I have no worries of making anyone mad with having chickens! I have read so much about different breeds etc. I live in central indiana and I guess my first question would be what would be my best choice? I would like to have eggs daily I know some do not lay everyday!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! A great place to start reading fast is the BYC Learning Center, lots of great articles on all aspects of chicken keeping! You'll have those first chicks before he knows it! https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center
The Henderson chicken breed chart compares a lot of popular breeds http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html. Also check out the BYC Breeds section for a lot of member reviews on the breeds when you have narrowed them down. https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds
So far as breeds go, for egg numbers alone, commercial White Leghorns for white eggs and the Red Sex Links (Golden Comet, Red Stars, ISA Browns etc) for brown eggs are probably the most popular layer. If you want breeds that don't lay quite as well but will lay for a longer time, Australorps, Orpingtons (lots of people really like these, great pets), Plymouth Rocks, Sussex, Delaware and Wyandottes are some other popular breeds that are usually pretty easy to get along with, they all lay different shades of brown eggs. The Easter Egger, often sold as Ameraucana by hatcheries, are a fun breed because they usually lay green/blue eggs that kids like, and they tend to be very nice birds, and then there are the Welsummer and Marans for dark brown eggs.
You might also like to check out your state thread for breeds your neighbors are happy with https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/730582/indiana-bycers-here/9670

Welcome to BYC!

Yes, you have to keep the ball rolling before the hubby changes his mind!! What a disappointment that would be. :-)

Kelsie has given you all kinds of great links to follow on the learning center, breeds and your state thread to chat with others in your area.

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Thank you everyone I have started reading immediately and so much more to read! Thanks for all the links I will be checking out each one! I love the DIY coops and plans I came across! That will be very helpful! I'm so excited about this journey I feel like a kid in a candy store!
