Hi Everyone!

I'm Shannon and live in the beautiful Litchfield Hills of CT for the past 11 years. Our family is excited to finally embark on chicken-keeping after many years of talking about it! We've waited until our two children grew up a bit so that they could also learn to keep and care for our layer-only flock. They are currently 9 yr old twins. I have been scouring this board for months among other google search results, but now I only come to BYC because 99% of my questions are always answered here! Here are my survey Q/A's:

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Yes, and my 4-6 wk old chicks will be arriving in June.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? Zero, but will start with 6 hens and possibly 1 rooster.

(3) What breeds do you have? Will include: Amerecauna, Barred Rock, Silver-laced Wyandotte, Whiting True Blue, Buff Orpington, and Black Australorp. I would like to find a mature Lavender English Orpington rooster, but still researching...

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? NA

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Outdoor everything, reading, cooking, crafting with my kids, and travel.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. Family of five (Husband, twins, and my mother) + rescue dog, on 10 acres of farm property in CT.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D See intro above!

You've already discovered that this is an amazing place to learn about chickens. Now, you can share your experiences with everyone who's already here!

I like the diversity of your planned flock -- some lovely choices there. I bet your twins will have a great time with the chickens. Kudos to you for having a rescue dog, too. Nearly all of my canines have been rescues.

Welcome to BYC, LitchCoChick! I hope you have a great time here, and let us know when your flock arrives.

Hello, Shannon, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Wait on the rooster. Once you are comfortable with your pullets and they start laying, you can find a proven gentleman of a rooster and add him to your flock vs. getting a male chick or someone's "oops" cockerel who is just pretty and no one really knows his temperament.
Go for one that has been broody hatched and raised with older birds and a senior rooster. They tend to be good boys.
