Hi, I live in Australia, Melbourne. This is a great site as I have only just bought 4 laying hens. The breed is Austalorp, what pleasure they give, don't mind the eggs either.

My hens are almost a year old, and about 3 months ago ( Spring) they molted, the problem is they haven't grown new feathers. Someone said that as long as the birds are laying, and they are, and are healthy it just means that they can't lay and produce feathers too. I would like others opinion please.

Regards Harold

First off,

Welcome to BYC!!

So glad you found us.

I would get some gamebird feed with a higher protein content and see if that helps them grow back their feathers.

Or if you are feeling wealthy, you could give them a can or two of tuna or salmon. Adds Omega IIIs to the eggs.. very healthy and it gives them a protein boost.

Hi Harold!

from S. Florida! Its great to have you here with us! Enjoy!

You can also add some quinoa, kamut, millet, oats or other whole grains to their food to boost nutrients for the feathers. Flax seeds help boost the omega's they are getting (and therefore whats you are getting in the eggs).
Good luck
...ohh... and welcome!
