I am designing while starting to build my first coop for 5-7 coturnix and looking for your input. Its 8’ x 3’ that includes an enclosed 3’x3’ box. It will have legs. The back and box is wood and one side and the front will be wire mesh. I have three doors so I can easily reach every part of it. Predators are around so security is vital (fox, hawks, coon, black snakes). I don’t want a wire mesh floor where the eggs roll out to be collected, rather wanting a little more natural environment. I’ve read a good bit but have no experience and several questions before going further.

Do you recommend a wire floor with poop trays or a solid floor? If wire do you recommend wood chips, straw, pine needles or any type of bedding to make it easier on their feet? Ease of cleaning while minimizing intrusion is the goal and want to balance that with a comfortable environment.

How important is a roof that opens? It doesn’t look like many have one that opens and have read they don’t like being approached from above. But it’s not too late to add hinges If there are reasons to open from above.

Should the enclosed part have light from a window or is weather protection more important (the location will minimize rain getting in)?

What other features are good to include?

Thanks in advance for your help!

My pen was 4x8 separated into 3 sections I had plywood walls as section dividers with a piece of wood I could flip open or closed and use the whole pen or section it off for hurt birds or problem males. The front and bottom was 1/2inch hardware cloth. I built a little solid bottom 2 inch deep tray with sand in it so they could get off the wire and take dust baths. I had a piece of plywood under the wire for a poop board, scrape it off into a bucket use it in the garden. Plus on high protein feed the poop smells horrible. The best feeder I had I made from 3 inch pvc and cut notches down one side in a zipper pattern they hardly wasted any food with it unlike the commercial feeders they sell. I put some little creamer or coffee containers in for hiding.

You definitely do not want it to get wet inside. Wet will stink. The dryer the better.
Also it depends on what type of quail as to how many you can house together. Usually it's only one male per cage
