Well we finally got our babies...had them about a week, already had an issue with the dog and an injured chick. Other than that I think I'm doing okay...I posted a while back when I joined the forum. Didn't have any chicks yet. Just read forums and chicken books. We still have our 2-3 week old Red Comet pullets under the lights, they do outside for a bit as the weather here in VA is warming up nicely near the southern coast.

I am going to keep reading. Thank you so much for this forum it is a wealth of information. So keep posting cause this 'burbs girl needs all the help she can get.

Hi there, welcome to BYC - glad you found us!

Do you have a cover over your brooder? Even though I have covers on all of my brooders, I still live in fear of one of my dogs (or the housecat) getting to a very young bird. They are so very fragile! Hope you have no further issues!

Welcome to BYC!

So sorry about the dog attack. Most dogs see chickens as dinner so you have to be very careful.

Stop by our learning center for lots of great reads on all the aspects of keeping poultry, including an article on raising your new babies....

Good luck with your new babies and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Congratulations on your new chicks! Glad you were finally able to get them. Comets are a nice laying hen, you should get lots of big brown eggs.
Was it your dog that you had a problem with? There are quite a few thread on BYC about training dogs to get along with chickens, you might find some tips that will work for your situation, ie https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/829562/training-teaching-a-dog-about-chickens

Thank you all for the replies.
Our dog wants to mother the baby chicks. She watches them in brooder, lays by the brooder.
She mother's the Tom Cat we have too, treats him like her baby.
The little pullet that got injured seems okay. Earlier was wanting to stand up and not lay down to rest, so I just held her my lap for a while, kept her warm so she could sleep without getting bumped around.
We went out to dinner and came home and she seems fine, still a little frazzled but I can't see anything really wrong. So hoping all goes well through the evening. I am guessing if she made it this far she is doing ok.
