wow i was a newbie until 9 weeks ago now i FEEL like a pro,lol. but i dont have many anwsers to your questions i only know about little guys so far..

i put mine not to high so they can hop on it i wouldnt do it more then 1-2ft. if that just incase they fall off or so they call just jump on,kinda feel it out. they might not use it for a while but they wil eventually oh! and i can't remebe rhow man your getting but i put a stuffy in my hutch and they love him! sorry i don't have more anwsers but i thought one was better then none.have fun!!!

3. my chicks are on the start and grow for chicks and thats supposed to be until their 20weeks. i don't think you introduce layer feed until like 20 weeks, but don't take me on that one, the feed store people should know and they should have a breed book their to help.
as for the cleaning thing i hear as long as its non-toxic it'll be fine.
