I am a first year chicken farmer and have learned a lot from the " raising backyard chickens" Facebook posts. I have 5 RR that I got from someone and they were already 2 years old. They are laying good withe the exception of one in molt laying papershell eggs. I do not have a rooster but am trying to decide on getting one to start raising chicks. My chickens have not been broody since I have had them and the lady said they had not when she had them. Do I need to get a rooster form them to decide to start sitting? If not then should I look into getting a few new young hens to start the cycle over?

The presence of a rooster will not 'make' a hen go broody....
.....a hen will go broody when her hormones tell her too, whether there's a rooster around or not.

Read up on integration before getting replacement layers.
