Hi! everyone. I'm OKbirdwatcher. I live in Oklahoma and previously my interest was mostly in wild birds.
A little over a year ago though, we decided we'd like to be able to have our own fresh eggs, as one way of becoming more self-sufficient. DH helped his parents take care of chickens as a child but has been away from them for many years. Both my grandmothers had chickens when I was a child and that was my only experience with them. My parents operated a Grade A dairy and were not allowed to also have chickens on the premises.
So, after much discussion, construction of the coop and run started about a month ago and was finished last weekend. Tuesday evening we purchased our first pullets from a neighbor - 5 RIRs and 5 Black Australorps, and Wednesday afternoon we collected our first 7 eggs!
