got My first flock march 20. Just wanted them for eggs. But instead of 4 leghorns I think we got cornish cross. I also got a Sumatra and a Silkie. The 4 White ones are growing so much faster than the others. So be careful when you pick your chicks out. If they are meat birds I don't know what to do with them come butcher age. And when is that any way? I have been feeding them separately. But letting them free range and sleep together. The 2 little ones can't stand to be separated from the others. I am still holding out hope that they are white rocks or leghorns. But I think the odds are against me. What do you think?
I have been learning so much on this site. Never knew there was so much to raising chickens. I am loving it though. My 9 year old son thinks they're grate too. Hopefully in the warmer climate of southern Georgia my 4 mystery birds have the chance at a log life.
How old are the chicks now? Cornish x meat birds generally are Processed, very early. They are bred to have explosive growth and eat constantly if allowed to. If they aren't processed their bodies start going downhill - their organs cannot support their size. Their legs give out, and they generally have heart attacks. Even with best of care they don't live very long.
Your misfortune happens often. Either the birds are mislabeled at feed stores or the employees have no idea about chicken breeds. It is a very sad situation especially when children are involved.
Your could check out the meatbird threads on BYC for more information.
I have enlarged your photos, and if all birds pictured are the same age, I would think if they are Cornish, they are Jumbo. Cornish x get fat very early but, they are so tall also.
Others should be coming along to answer you, and they may have different opinions. You could post the photos at "what breed or gender is this," and even on the meatbird threads for a positive ID.
Welcome to Backyard chickens, I wish we were meeting over better circumstances. If it turns out I am mistaken, I will be as relieved as you.
