Hello all,

My fiancee and I are new to BackYard Chickens. Thanks for having us.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Tim has had chickens for years. I started helping with his when we started dating. Now we share the responsibility together.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 80. Eleven hens are about 11-12 months old and laying. Not sure of the breed, but they are huge and white (got them grown locally). The rest we got in July this year.

(3) What breeds do you have?
We have a few of a lot of various breeds including Americauna, New Hampshire, Barred Rock, RIR, Faverolles, Cochin, Turkens (bare neck), Black Star, Cuckoo Marans, Broilers, Leghorn, Australorp, Silver laced wyandotte, Red Star, and Delaware.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Searching for info on different breeds.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Traveling, cooking, reading, working on things around the house.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I am a teacher and have been for 22 years. Tim is a millwright and has been for 15 years. We have grown children who live elsewhere (mostly). Besides the chickens we have a couple of cats and a dog. We are both in our 40's, and the chickens are something we enjoy taking care of together. They are pets more than anything, and we spend a lot of time giving them treats (meal worms) and teaching them to eat out of our hands.

Looking forward to membership.

Thanks,

Karen & Tim

Welcome to BYC, Karen and Tim. Glad you decided to join our flock. You have a very good and thorough introduction, and a nice mix of breeds and hybrids. Black Stars (Black Sex Links) are my favorites as they are very friendly and hardy, egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 large brown eggs per hen per year. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

so glad you have joined us.

Nice intro.

I have only a small flock of 5 hens, and cannot imagine tending 80 chickens. Like an overloaded classroom of students
