Newbie From Indiana

If you just want to get them out of the house, you can fix up a space for them inside the coop WITH a heat lamp just like a brooder setup.

Temps would have to be kept constant.

It's best to move them out when they have most of their feathers (about 4 weeks).

Good luck!

Hello Newbie from Indiana! I', an old newbie from southern Indiana. I already have fallen in love with this site. It is so informative and fun. Hope we have many conversations together. Renae:yiipchick

Welcome from Indiana! I have been raising chickens for several years. Here is what I do. Keep them in a brooder which consists of large rubber horse trough in my basement under a 150 watt heat lamp. I give them grass clippings and sand box to play and scratch in.

If weather is nice, approx. 80 degrees I take them out to a dog kennel pen right outside my basement door. It has a net on top to keep predators out. I make sure the chicks have shade and a dog box to run into in case of rain.

At night I bring them back to basement brooder. After they are fully feathered out I just use a 60 watt bulb in daytime for the brooder and shut it off at night. When I feel they are old enough, say 3 months or so I take them out to barn and give them a secure pen with a covered run to go out in.

Alot of work but once grown they are easy to care for! good luck.
