I oriented the duck house so that the taller side was north, the higher side was south because in the northern hemisphere here and where we are (in a north-south oriented valley or hollow) the cold winds come from the north and the winter sun is in the south - just helps keep the house a tad bit less cold in the winter.
In the southern hemisphere a north-facing orientation would be the way to go.
