Greetings everyone.

I have yet to start my flock as I am still finishing up the coop and joined here to hopefully avoid making early mistakes and learning the ins and out from all of your experiences.

Out City allows up to 12 Hens and no Roosters, i am adding chickens for egg production for our family. ( looking to start with 4)
The wife and I, 2 boys (3rd one due next week) and a mother in law living in our home.

I am the EMS Director/Deputy Fire Chief, we currently raise rabbits, and i am looking to add to our small back yard farm, the boys love learning about the animals, care, feeding and working the gardening.

I look forward to many great conversations on here.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. The Learning center is a great place to start, then hop over to "Raising Backyard Chickens," forum. That should keep you busy for awhile.

I think it's a good idea to start with 4 hens to see if this is really something you'd like to stay with. It's great when kids get involved.

Welcome to BYC. I'm glad you decided to join our flock. Raising chickens is a great experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Drumstick diva has given you some good advice. There is loads of useful information in our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. If egg production is your main priority, I would suggest Black Sex Links (Black Stars) as they are hardy and friendly, egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your flock.
