Newbie from Kentucky

I would like to say Thank You to everyone for the warm welcome, I really appreciate all the great info, I am really at a loss trying to figure out this crazy rooster.
I have wanted to get rid of him since his first attack, my wife tells me he is just protecting his flock to give him some time. My wife tells me he is such a
pretty rooster, which he is, how ever we also have 4 real good hens missing feathers on their backs and I don't think they make sun block for chickens.
The reason that we purchased a rooster was to increase the flock, we were hoping to get at least 8 new hens to replace the older hens when they stop
laying. We bought these chickens for a good source of eggs and meat, this has got to be healthier than the super market chicken and eggs.

I have received a lot of information and great advice since I joined this community yesterday. I never gave any thought to the ideal that any offspring from
this rooster could have a nasty attitude, so it looks like I am in the market for a new rooster and if one of the reds is a rooster I am not to sure about keeping
him, from reading about reds yesterday, I have found out that reds are not people birds either and the roosters are not friendly either.????

So what rooster should I get for my Golden Lace Wyandotte and red hens? Both breeds, wyandotte and red are big birds full grown???
How soon should I get rid of mister nasty? I will need to get my wife to read all the great info that I have received on this forum in order to put the
nasty rooster on the table. Since I put that crazy rooster in the box for a time out period for 15 minutes on Wednesday, he has decided to keep his
distance, so it may be harder to convince my wife the rooster needs to go.

Anyone have a rooster for sale that would be a good bird for our wyandotte hens with friendly attitude and about 1 year old??

I have been doing some reading on my Golden Lace Wyandotte chickens
and when it comes to needing a broody type it states not very often,
how ever they are also suppose to be good mothers??

Can anyone get a handle on that info? I mean they are not a broody
type of chicken, but they make good mothers????? Seems to me you
can't have one without the other.....

Maybe we should get some replacements, like maybe Speckled Sussex
Chickens, from what I have read, they are not good fliers, good egg and meat birds,
cold hardy, lay large brown eggs and are broody.

I have been looking at the auto feeders and thinking about making a treadle feeder.
Has anyone made and use a feeder like this for their chickens?

It looks like a good ideal, I have a number of Ground Doves, Starlings and other birds
visiting my coop for a bite.

I have seen so many doves that I am thinking about hunting dove this fall, the only way
I will get my investment back,

A hen can be a good broody even if she doesn't go broody very often, as long as she does a good job hatching eggs and raising the chicks when she does decide to go broody. Depending on how many times a year you want to hatch eggs you may actually prefer the sort of broody that will only go broody maybe once a year rather than one that goes broody every five minutes... the once a year broody will lay a lot more eggs in the long run.
If you want purebreds you could try another Wyandotte roo from a different source, they are one of my favorite breeds (love the blue laced red color) and I actually have found to roosters to be very nice overall. Or how about an Easter Egger roo, pullets would have a good chance of laying green eggs. Sussex are another nice breed, very very similar to the Wyandottes, actually not any more broody ime but really good mothers when they are. If you are looking for a standard breed mostly for a broody you might consider adding a Cochin or two to your flock.
For finding local birds or another rooster post in your state thread for the best chance.
I've never used a treadle feeder, you might want to post in the Feeding/Watering Your Flock forum about them, there are several designs for them in the Coops section and a number of short threads if you do a search

I did a little looking in a local for sale listing and I found another Wyandotte Rooster, Golden Lace if my memory is
correct a little over 1 year old, the man said he was a friendly rooster, I just need to go check him out and see how
he acts and not to far away either, plus the price is right $10.00. The rooster was kept with a wyandotte hen
but the hen was sold.
