Newbie From New England

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to our flock. I've raised Buff Orpingtons for years (along with dozens of other breeds), and they are a wonderful breed; hardy, calm and gentle (my children, and now my granddaughter, made lap pets of them), and good layers of large, brown eggs. Speckled Sussex have very similar qualities and I have seriously considered getting some more of them. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your chicks.

I'm glad you joined us!

Chicks usually tend to develop a personality by about 8 weeks of age. Their temperament does fluctuate, though, as they mature further.

Thanks for the responses. Looks like the plan is that I will brood them all and then decided which ones I could live without. A hard task I'm sure, but at lease I'll have visitation rights! I had to stop myself from spending all day looking at other chicks and eggs online. How do you ever stop? There are already so many breeds I'd love to have! Trying to just focus on the ones coming this spring and convince myself to get through this year before I think of more (although those chocolate orpingtons are awful irresistible!).

Newbie from northern Massachusetts here with my coop on order and expecting my first chicks in early April! We've been planning to keep chickens for years, and I'm so excited everything finally fell into place! I am expecting to have RI Reds, NH reds, Buff Orbingtons, Speckled Sussex, Barred Plymouth Rocks, and White Cochin. I ordered a 4x8 coop and will have a 16x40 run with 8x16 of it covered so I can fit all 15 I have on order, but my friend asked if we could split as she'd love to start out with about a half dozen. This is tempting as there are already some other breeds I know I'd love to have someday and starting with around 8 or 9 this year will give me room to grow down the road. My questions is this. How early do their personalities show? I'd love to take my pick of the littler so to speak and am happy to raise them all until I get a good feel for which ones we have bonded with the most. Having 4 children myself I'm sure the kids will have their favorites too. My friend is fine with taking them at any stage from day old to pullet but she obviously needs to prepare if she will be brooding hers. This website has been such a wonderful resource, I'm so glad I found it!
Like others say I would wait until they are older....but don't leave her with all the roosters lol!

Anyways, RIR Lay big eggs, Buff Orps are very prettty but my roo is agressize, mine was so unique..she layed an egg only when she pleased lol! Speckled Sussex are beautiful and are fair egg layers, but mine got sick and suddenly died..of course that can happen with any breed. My other one was a very pretty chicken..only once did they lay an egg in the run. Cochins are beauties and great cold weather chickens!! They get really gfluffy big! Thats my two cents....enjoy your birdies!!
