Yes, we are new to raising chickens! Well, each of our (my boyfriend & I) families had chickens for a period of time when we were kids, but neither of us remember a thing about raising them! We bought 5 day old chicks this past Friday, so they are a little over a week old now.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 12!
(3) What breeds do you have?
We have 3 Black Sex Links, 3 Ameraucanas, 5 Buff Cochins, and 1 Buff Orpington
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Found you by searching on the internet about chicken breeds.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
We kayak, fish, garden, snowboard, just to name a few!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Our family consists of me, my boyfriend/partner Shane (we live as married but don't feel a need to make it official), and his son, age 15, and daughter, age 11. We have 2 dogs and 2 cats, so it makes for a busy, but fun household. Our house sits on 4 acres of land on a dead end dirt road in a rural community (that is not far at all from some bigger cities). WHen we bought the house 5 years ago, it already had a chicken coop on it. We finally bit the bullet and bought some chickens, and are fixing up the coop. We will also get some guinea hens to help protect the chickens when we have them out and about.
Reasons for getting chickens? Eggs, raising a 'farm' animal, teaching the kids, and just wanted to do it!
