Hi, my name is Michelle. I have been reading the sight for about a week or so now and decided to become a member. My husband and I are beginning to build a med/small coop for a hand full of hens. I will be using powder coated welded wire panels from a dog kennel for a run and no climb horse fence we have laying around, as a top to keep chickens from flying out and most predators from getting in.

I am super happy with the threads I have found about breeds and coops so far. I have had a few chickens here and there but just as pets, I re homed them with friends in the country when they were ready to lay. This is my first attempt at actually raising more than 1 at a time for a backyard project. I figure with the garden I have planned, I will have lots of treats and supplemental feed for them and they will help my compost pile for next years garden.

We moved here (in town) last April but we were looking for a house in the hills. I wanted chickens, goats and just a little of everything basically. I thought my dreams of selfsustainment had no hope when we settled for this home in town due to nothing much on the market when we were trying to buy. Anyway looked at the city ordinance and was surprised that it allowed 12 chickens. I figured 3 or 4. So that is how I found my way here. Getting ideas and info so I wouldn't build something too big, small or irritating in lack of function.

Welcome Michelle! I am new my self and everyone has been very inviting! I think you have already noticed how helpful the site is while you have been researching.
 
Oooo 12 chickens...LOVELY! You will be surprised how self sufficient you can be with a town lot. We are getting more so everyday; we even had more grapes than we could eat or dehydrate this year. Some people will also barter; veggies and eggs for goat milk, meat rabbits and the like if you are into that. This year because of water concerns we are making a key hole garden and all of the building materials were scraps so if we can barter for seeds in addition
to those from last year, our garden this year will cost us a grand total of $0.00. Good luck, it is a great experience.

Thank you for the welcome. Spent the last couple of hours looking at chick breeds from Chickens For Backyards. Anyone order chicks from them and what was your experience? Anyone recommend how to pick up 1 or 2 pullets of several breeds? Seems pretty expensive but I want a variety of easy goings hens that lay anything but white eggs.

If I order from them it will be 14 chicks because they are unsexed. Figured some might die and the roos can be sold along with any pullets with wierd quirks.
